Discover Day 2022 Winners
November 21, 2022
On Oct. 27, Drexel’s College of Medicine’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Professional Studies hosted their annual research symposium, Discovery Day, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Center City, Philadelphia. The day commenced with research poster presentations from more than 300 doctoral and master's students, medical students, MD/PhD students, undergraduate, high school, residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral trainees, and eight platform presentations on topics ranging from HIV/AIDS to spinal cord injury. Posters and platforms were judged by faculty, alumni and special guests. Twenty-two students were selected for awards.
This year’s keynote speaker was Veronica A. Alvarez, PhD, acting chief of the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Section on Neuronal Structure, and lab chief of NIAAA’s Laboratory on Neurobiology of Compulsive Behaviors spoke about her research on vulnerability mechanisms for substance use disorder, in particular alcohol abuse.
Discovery Day plays a critical role in training medical and graduate students to present their research in a real-world professional conference environment and develop the necessary skills and experience needed to be successful in their career. For many students, this year’s event was their first time presenting in this setting, or the first since the pandemic.
